The forecast on this day was for heavy rain. It was a travel day for us as we were making our way back south. We spent the night in Canmore and thought we’d do a small hike on the way back down to Waterton NP. Since it was supposed to be raining pretty hard we slept in a little more than normal but, of course, when we got up and looked outside we saw the sun peaking behind the clouds. By the time we drove down to Kananaskis it was a beautiful sunny day. Continue reading “Rawson Lake Trail – Kananaskis Country, AB”

Of all the hikes we went on during our three week adventure the Berg Lake Trail was the one that I obsessed about the most. This was the big one! It is a very long day hike but it includes beautiful glacial lakes, huge beautiful waterfalls and the tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies. This was a travel day so we knew we didn’t have enough time to bite off too big of a hike and still be able to see the roadside stops between Canmore in Banff and Jasper. Bow Lake seemed to offer what we were looking for. It was about a 12 mile hike to a small glacial lake. As it turns out we did not make it to that glacial lake but more about that later. Moraine Lake Trail

Moraine Lake is one of most photographed lakes in Canada if not the whole world. From the east shore with the Valley of the Ten Peaks as a backdrop we had the privilege of witnessing in person one of natures greatest scenes. We, of course, arrived early in the morning when there were very few people there. We first climbed a small trail to the lookout point on the east side to get a few iconic photos. It completely lived up to its billing. Continue reading “Moraine Lake to Wenkchemna Pass – Banff NP”

The forecast for the day was for a slight chance of rain so, of course, it rained on us pretty much the whole hike. But if we were going to have a rain day a hike to waterfalls was the one to have it on. Not only would the falls be bigger but the crowds would also be smaller. Fortunately, Sandy and I have learned through experience so we have excellent breathable rain jackets, water resistant hiking pants and hiking gaiters on our shoes so we stayed fairly warm and dry the whole time. This trail begins at the Lake Louise Chateau. The Chateau is a high end hotel that sits right along the east shore of Lake Louise. As is the case for most lakes that are fed by glaciers, the glacial silt that remains suspended in the water refracts light in such a way to produce an almost unnatural color of greenish blue.
